Frequently Asked Questions

What is this tool for?

Cutting a clean, deep edge where lawn meets a path, drive, bed or tree ring, standing up. It is also the tool to cut the slot before you fit plastic or steel edging.

Is it the same as the half moon shovel?

Yes. Both pages sell the same half moon edger. Buy from whichever page you landed on.

What do I get?

The edger in two parts, handle and head, packed separately for safe shipping. They go together in a minute.

How do I use it?

Line the blade up on your edge, step on the foot rim to drive it into the turf, rock it back, lift and move along. Pull the cut strip away and you have a clean line.

Can it cut curves?

Yes. The half moon blade is made for curves. Work in short overlapping cuts around a bed or a tree ring.

Does it need power?

No. It is a manual tool. Your weight and the step do the work.

What is it made of?

Powder-coated steel for the blade and head. It is built not to warp, rust, chip or splinter.

How much does it cost?

R1,590. Delivery is free once your order is R750 or more, so a single order qualifies.

Are there other sizes or options?

One edger is listed. The half moon shovel page sells the same item.

What do the photos show?

The edger assembled and in use along lawn edges. Lawn and garden props are not included.

Which specs should I check before I buy?

The half moon blade, the foot step and that it ships in two parts. If anything is unclear, ask us first.

One. Set the quantity on this page or in your basket.

Can I order more than one?

Yes. Set the quantity on this page or change it in your basket.

How often will I need to edge?

Every few weeks in the growing season for a sharp line. Once the edge is cut, a quick pass keeps it tidy.

Will it work in hard ground?

It cuts turf well in normal soil. Water the edge the day before if the ground is baked, and keep the blade off buried stones.

Any safety tips?

Wear closed shoes, keep your other foot clear of the blade, and check the handle is locked to the head before you start.

Can I use it to fit edging?

Yes. Mark your line, cut the slot with the edger, then set plastic or steel edging into it.

How do I look after it?

Knock the soil off, wipe the blade and store it dry. Keep the cutting edge sharp with a file now and then.

Does it come assembled?

No. The handle and head are packed apart for shipping safety. Assembly takes a minute.

Can I check it will suit my job before I buy?

Yes. Tell us what you are edging and we will tell you straight whether this is the right tool.

Delivery is free when the goods total after any discount is R750 or more. Otherwise the express-delivery charge is R250.

How long does delivery take?

Allow 24-48 hours for handling, then an estimated 5-7 days in transit. These are estimates, not a promised arrival date.

Can I use the valued-customer code?

Yes. It takes 15% off the goods. Delivery is not discounted, and free delivery is worked out on the discounted goods total.

How do I track my order?

Use the Order Tracking page with the details we send after dispatch. If anything looks stuck, email us with your order reference.

Can I return it if I change my mind?

Yes, within 15 days of purchase for an unused stock item in original resaleable condition with proof of purchase. An R300 packing and handling deduction and return postage apply where the law allows it. The 7-day ECTA cooling-off right and your CPA rights are separate and are never reduced by our policy.

Can I cancel before it ships?

Manual lawn edger: the complete guide

3 min read Lawn Edge South Africa

A lawn edger does one thing: it cuts a clean line where the grass meets something else. This one has a half moon steel blade on a long handle with a step on top, so the cut comes from your weight, not your back. No cord, no fuel, no kneeling.

Specifications

  • Half moon steel blade, powder-coated
  • Foot rim on the blade for leverage
  • Extended-reach handle, no bending
  • Manual, no power needed
  • Ships in two parts, handle and head, for safe transport

This is the same edger sold on our half moon shovel page. Buy from either.

How to use it

  1. Slot the handle into the head and check it is locked.
  2. Mark the line you want with a hose or a string line.
  3. Stand the blade on the line and step on the rim. Rock it slightly to slice through the turf.
  4. Lift, move along the width of the blade, and repeat. Overlap each cut a little.
  5. Pull the cut strip of turf away from the path or bed side.
  6. Repeat every few weeks in the growing season to keep the line sharp.

Fitting edging with it

Cut your line first, then set flexible plastic edging or a steel section into the slot and spike it. Fitting goes twice as fast through a cut line.

Where it works

Along paths, drives and patios where grass creeps over the concrete. Around trees and planters. Around beds, where the curved blade follows a round edge in short cuts.

Is it right for the job?

It cuts a new edge or restores an old one. To keep an edge trimmed along a hard path between cuts, the wheel edger is quicker. For a lawn that needs more than an edge, see the dethatching rake.

Looking after it

Knock the soil off, wipe the blade and store it dry, hung up if you can. Keep the cutting edge sharp with a file now and then. Water the lawn edge the day before if the ground is baked hard.
