Warm rusted steel. A line that looks like it has always been there.

Corten weathering steel, supplied already rusted, in 100mm or 150mm face heights. Interlocking metre sections, hammered in, sold by the metre.

Corten is the edging landscapers reach for when they want a border that looks settled from day one. The rust is the finish. It forms a stable skin that never needs painting and sits beautifully against green.

We supply it already weathered, so there is no waiting for the colour to come through. Each 1.5mm section covers a metre, interlocks with the next, and hammers in on seven 100mm spikes. Pick a 100mm face for a subtle line or 150mm to hold back a deeper bed.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is this edging for?

Putting a clean, permanent line between lawn and bed, or along a path or driveway, with the warm rusted look of corten. It holds bark and soil in the bed and stops grass runners crossing.

Does the rust keep going?

It settles. Weathering steel forms a stable rust skin that protects the steel underneath, which is why it never needs painting. We supply it already rusted so it looks right from the start.

Which height should I pick?

100mm is the everyday choice for a line between lawn and bed. Go to 150mm if you are holding back a deeper layer of bark or stone, or want more face showing.

What do I get per metre?

One 1075mm section that covers one metre once the 75mm interlock overlaps the next, plus seven 100mm spikes. The 100mm length weighs about 1.6kg, the 150mm about 1.7kg.

How do I install it?

Mark your line, stand the section on it, and drive the spikes in with a rubber mallet. Slot the next section into the overlap and carry on. No digging needed in normal soil.

Can it follow a curve?

Yes. The steel bends to follow a curve or ride over a change in level, and holds a dead straight line if that is what you want.

Can I cut it?

Yes. For a short run, measure what you need and cut with an angle grinder or hacksaw. Wear gloves and eye protection.

How much does it cost?

100mm: R1,000; 150mm: R1,300 per metre. Delivery is free once your order is R750 or more. Under that it is a flat R250.

Are there other sizes or options?

Two face heights. Pick the height before you add it to your basket and the price updates.

What do the photos show?

The edging in place along beds and lawns so you can judge the colour and the look. Plants, pots and garden props are not included.

Which specs should I check before I buy?

Face height (100mm or 150mm), section coverage (1m with a 75mm overlap), thickness (1.5mm) and the seven spikes per section. If anything is unclear, ask us first.

How do I work out how many metres I need?

Measure the edge and round up to the next metre. The overlap is already allowed for, so one section equals one metre. Add a little for corners, then check your basket before paying.

Can I order more than one metre?

Yes. Set the quantity to the number of metres you need, on this page or in your basket.

Will it suit every garden?

It holds fast in all normal soils. Very rocky ground can stop a spike, so you may need to shift the section slightly or lift a stone out. If you are unsure, send us a photo and your measurements before you order.

How should I prepare the ground?

Mark your line with string, clear weeds and loose stones, and check for shallow pipes or cables before you drive spikes in.

Any safety tips while fitting it?

Wear gloves, since rusted steel marks hands and clothes, plus sturdy footwear. Use a rubber mallet and keep kids and pets clear while you hammer.

What if the ground is hard or stony?

Water the line the day before so the soil is softer, and move the section a few centimetres if a spike hits a rock. Do not force it.

Will it stain my path or pavers?

Rust run-off can mark light-coloured concrete or pavers, especially in the first season. Keep the edging a little back from pale surfaces or accept a bit of patina.

Can I use it as a retaining wall?

No. The 150mm face will hold back a shallow bed of bark or stone, but it is a garden edge, not a retaining wall. It is not load bearing.

Can I check it will suit my garden before I buy?

Yes. Send us the measurements, a photo of the edge and what you have there now, and we will tell you straight which height to go for.

Is the price in rand?

Yes. Product prices and checkout totals are in rand.

What does delivery cost?

Delivery is free when the goods total after any discount is R750 or more. Otherwise the express-delivery charge is R250.

How long does delivery take?

Allow 2 working days for dispatch, then up to 7 working days for delivery by tracked courier. These are estimates, not a promised arrival date.

Can I use the valued-customer code?

Yes. It takes 15% off the goods. Delivery is not discounted, and free delivery is worked out on the discounted goods total.

How do I track my order?

Use the Order Tracking page with the details we send after dispatch. If anything looks stuck, email us with your order reference.

Can I return it if I change my mind?

Yes, within 15 days of purchase for an unused stock item in original resaleable condition with proof of purchase. An R300 packing and handling deduction and return postage apply where the law allows it. The 7-day ECTA cooling-off right and your CPA rights are separate and are never reduced by our policy.

What if it arrives damaged or wrong?

Contact us with your order reference and photos where useful. Under the Consumer Protection Act, goods that fail the required quality standards within six months of delivery can be returned at our risk and expense for repair, replacement or refund. No change-of-mind deduction applies.

Can I cancel before it ships?

Contact support as soon as possible. The voluntary cancellation policy accepts requests within 12 hours and before shipment, with a 12.5% processing fee where the law allows it. Your ECTA and CPA rights are not reduced.

I have a big project. Can you help?

Yes. Use the wholesale enquiry page and tell us the products, quantities and your delivery postcode.

Where do I get help?

Email support@lawnedge.co.za or use the Contact page. Include the product name and your question, plus your order reference if you have one.

Corten edging: the complete guide

4 min read Lawn Edge South Africa

Weathering steel was developed so bridges and buildings would not need painting. Exposed to the weather it forms a stable rust-coloured skin that protects the steel underneath, and then it stops. That is why corten edging has the warm, settled look people want, and why it is used by professional landscapers.

Sizes and specifications

Both heights are the same section. The only difference is how much face shows.

100mm face height

  • 1075mm lengths, 1m coverage with a 75mm interlock overlap
  • 100mm face height, 1.5mm thick
  • Seven 100mm spikes per metre
  • About 1.6kg per length

150mm face height

  • 1075mm lengths, 1m coverage with a 75mm interlock overlap
  • 150mm face height, 1.5mm thick
  • Seven 100mm spikes per metre
  • About 1.7kg per length

Supplied in a ready-to-use rusted state. Sold by the metre, no minimum.

How to fit it

  1. Mark your line with string and clear weeds and loose stones.
  2. Check for shallow pipes or cables before you drive spikes in.
  3. Put gloves on. Rusted steel marks hands and clothes.
  4. Stand the first section on the line and drive the spikes in with a rubber mallet.
  5. Slot the next section into the overlap and drive its spikes in. Carry on along the line, bending each section to follow a curve if you need to.
  6. For a short run, cut with a grinder or hacksaw. The cut edge will weather to match within a season.

Where it works

Between lawn and bed. Along a gravel path. Around a raised bed of bark or stone, where the 150mm face earns its keep. Around trees and native plantings, where the colour sits well against green. It holds fast in all normal soils and bends to virtually any shape.

Things to know about corten

The rust settles. Weathering steel is designed to form its skin and then stop, so it does not keep thinning the way plain steel would. It needs no paint or coating, ever, and the steel is fully recyclable.

Run-off can mark pale surfaces. In the first season, rain washing over corten can leave a tint on light concrete or pavers. Keep the edging a little back from pale paving, or accept a bit of patina.

It bends. The 1.5mm section follows a curve by hand as you fit it and holds the shape once the spikes are in.

Is it right for the job?

If you want a black line instead of rust, the black steel edging is the same section with a black coating. Beside pale pavers, the stainless edging avoids any risk of marks. For tight curves, the flexible plastic edging bends further. For a border that looks like it has always been there, this is the one.

Looking after it

Nothing to do. Knock off soil now and then and check the sections are still locked together after a hard frost.
